Situated in the Satara district of maharashtra, on the way to Panchagani is a small town of Wai, famous for its Ganpati temple. It is a small town that attracts a lot of worshipers of Lord Ganesh. The Lord Ganesh temple is located on the banks of the Krishna river and is considered as jagrut as the Siddhivinayak in Mumbai. I remember the mute boy outside the temple minding footwear while writing this and somehow I cannot get him out of my mind.
Situated on the banks of river Krishna, 3 kms from Wai is a small hamlet of Menavali. It is famous for its bollywood appearences and also the wada house of Shrimant Nana Phadnis, though the house is almost in ruins now. It is a very beautiful ghat with a waterbody and the Lord Shiva temple which makes it a perfect village set up.
A lot of bollywood and marathi film shoots take place here and some of the famous shoots include: Mrityudand, Gangajaal, Omkara, Swades, Nayak, Ram Teri Ganga Maili Ho Gayi, Goonj Uthi Shehnai etc. This is the 'Charanpur' of Swades, the Aushotosh Govarikar film starring Shah Rukh Khan. The Nana Phadnis' wada house was used in 'Mrityudand' starring Madhuri Dixit and a song sequene from 'Nayak' starring Anil Kapoor and Rani Mukherjee was also shot here. Most of the locals have 'acting experience' as they also appear as junior artists and have shared screen space with some of the biggest stars.
It is an ideal location for village shoots and is also very well maintained. It is close to Mumbai and well connected by tar roads and thankfully there are no bumpy kaccha roads here!! The locals are also very helpful and friendly and enthsiastically show around the place.
